Tue. Aug. 21 @ 7pm: The Colour Purple: Queer Classic Films Screening
The great debate surrounding The Colour Purple is whether it constitutes as a queer film. The book made no bones about it. The film merely suggests it (no spoilers here). Judge for yourself as Reelout and HARS present the 4th film in our Queer Classic Films Screening Series. Admission is FREE. There will be complimentary popcorn and refreshments. This venue is wheelchair accessible. Please note this film’s subject matter includes domestic and racially motivated violence. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Get your groove on with local musical acts brought to you by Riverhead Brewing Company and prepare to be dazzled by Kingston Circus Arts performances sponsored by Luce Hair Studio. Our “Beer” Garden is making a comeback (and will be bigger) with Riverhead Brewing Company, MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company, Spearhead Brewing Company, Hard Way Cider Co. and Three Dog Winery! “This is one of the most awesome shows I have ever seen. Do not miss!!!” A brand new shadow puppet show by international collaborators Daniel Wishes from Canada and Seri Yanai from Japan. Over 200 intricately-cut shadow puppets with music by composer, singer and actor Elliot Loran.
Sat. Aug. 4 @ 8pm: K&P Fest: Agokwe – Unplugged @ former American Apparel (on Princess St)
Agokwe explores unrequited love between teenage boys from neighboring reserves. Mike is a hockey player and Jake is a traditional dancer. The boys notice each other at the Kenora Shoppers Mall and ultimately connect through a mutual love of movement while Mike is skating and Jake is dancing “like grass blowing in the wind.” They meet briefly at a post hockey-tournament party where they bashfully confess their desire for each other. However – youth, distance and isolation strive to pull the threads apart when tragedy intervenes. AGOKWE speaks to bullying, homophobia, unrequited love, social isolation and the lost traditions of the Anishnaabe.
Aug. 4, 9, 10, 11 @ 7:30pm: Legally Blonde: The Musical @ Domino Theatre
Tue. Aug. 7 @ 7pm-9:30pm: “And the journey continues…” monthly poetry open mic @ The Elm Cafe (all ages)
This poetry series provides an open, inviting, and encouraging space where the diversity of work, style, and voice is always welcome. Prose or even music is welcome as well, but still with the ‘6 minute’ rule. These readings are recorded for playback (with permission) on CFRC 101.9fm’s “finding a voice”. Hosted by Bruce Kauffman, this is an open event, so feel free to invite friends. It is as well an open-door event, so it’s fine to come late!
