FREE Public Lecture “From Daddy Warbucks to Donald Trump”
Thursday, September 21st @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PMFree
Speaker: Jeet Heer, Senior Editor of the New Republic and Twitter political commentator, speaking on Trump and the politics of popular culture
Abstract: Trump is not an exceptional phenomenon. Rather, he is a symptom of a long running trend: the fusion of the entertainment industry with politics. I’ll look at the comic strip Little Orphan Annie as a precursor to Trumpism and also the trajectory of entertainment and politics from Ronald Reagan to Sarah Palin to Trump.
Studies in National and International Development (SNID) is pleased to welcome everyone back to school and another year of eclectic, challenging and stimulating SNID talks. For over 30 years SNID has helped to foster an intellectual community at Queen’s/Kingston among people interested in “development” in the broadest national and international sense. This year we are grateful to the Queen’s Provost’s Office, the Faculty of Arts and Science, as well as several generous Queen’s departments, for providing both programming and staff funding. This allows us to invite guests to campus, as well as Queen’s researchers, to present their work. All SNID lectures are free and open to the public.
